My mother says
- Nurture your relationships with your siblings, they will be there for you forever.
- Make friends that help you become a better person/Muslim. Friends should inspire you.
- If only you spent as much time on your deen as you spend on school work…
- Do the right thing always
- A woman’s beauty lies in a small waist - not in a specific weight
- Dress nicely even if your going to work in your garden or throwing out the garbage - you never know who is watching ;)
- Dress up & look nice for family, relatives, friends. Never get so familiar that you don’t take care of your appearance in front of them - their opinions of you matter more than strangers
- Give at least an hour of your time to Allah every day
- God made man and women different - don’t try to emulate the opposite sex
- Women: curves, yes. Muscles, no!!
- Always have your kitchen, living room and bathroom clean & presentable. You can lock the bedroom but the rest is all accessible to anyone who drops in without notice
- Talk quietly (hard for majority of Somalis) & walk gracefully as a lady
- Treat others as you would want to be treated
- Don’t try to wear makeup regularly until your in your 30s. Your natural beauty is enough during your youth
- It’s okay to be single, it’s not okay to be stupid and rush into marriage for the sake of marriage
- and the most important one which she shows rather than says is: I love you.
