Alive & kickin'

Somewhat. Easter weekend was awesome. Best weekend I’ve had in such a long while. At the end of my studies, what do you know, I’m finally venturing out of my turtle shell and making friends. Specifically Muslim girlfriends. I’ve come to realize that there are so many more than I even imagined, if only I took the time to meet them. On Friday, 16 girls and I went to a Greek restaurant. Yummy. It had rave reviews & was located in the heart of downtown V-City. In the gay neighbourhood. ;)

We had to wait for about 20 mins but it was worth it. Huge, huge servings that made me full after only eating half. Our table had hummus as appetizer. It was okay; actually tasted bland & somewhat bitter to me. I don’t know why people like it so much. I had grilled prawns, rice pilaf, roasted potatoes and Greek salad. The food honestly tasted a bit like Somali food. And alot of it was ripped off Turkish food as my Turkish Friend kept point out. But honestly, as I was eating, all that I was thinking was ‘how can I eat this without a banana?’.

Then yesterday, inspired by Leyla, I tried to bake some desserts. I made a mouth smacking lemon meringue pie. Oh my lord, I was in heaven, it was that good. I actually had 4 pieces (I shrugged my shoulders and tried to look innocent when my younger siblings asked where the huge piece they were saving went…OOPS). I’ll come clean though: It was store bought ready mix. But still! I tried & succeeded okay? This coming from the girl who would get lost with a map in one hand & the directions in the other.

Then my little brother and sister begged me to make caramel apples after seeing them on a commercial. I’ve always liked caramel apples, especially at the fair. Just in case you guys want to make it here is a simple recipe I found that works just as well as homemade caramel. You need:

  • 1 large package of chewy, caramel candies
  • 2 table spoons of milk
  • 5 firm, refrigerated apples
Pour at least 30-40 pieces of caramel candies into a bowl along with the 2 tablespoons of milk. Place in microwave oven and set to 3 minutes. Add more minutes if need be until it ALL of it is melted and boiling.

Then let it set for about 3 minutes. Wash & de-stem your apples. Shove the end of a fork in each of the apples and use a spoon to coat the caramel all over it. Set it on waxed paper and let it harden for about 15-20 minutes (before it completely harden, you can place nuts, sprinkles, or small candies on the caramel).

Bonn appetite :)
